In addition to the sports we love to watch, there are also those we love to play, and the Club sponsors three successful alumni sports teams that welcome and include alumni of all ages, skill levels, and schools. Most of our alumni sports teams participate in the over 70-school strong Capital Alumni Network (CAN), which is a league of college- affiliated teams associated with their respective alumni chapters in the D.C. area. Georgetown’s alumni teams are known for on-field and off-field success, sportsmanship, and fun. Over the past year, dozens of D.C. Hoyas played in alumni basketball, flag football, and softball as part of the CAN program. The Club’s alumni sports were coordinated by D.C. Club Membership Chair John Crisafulli, who also plays on the softball team and coaches the basketball team.
The D.C. Hoyas’ CAN Softball team finished the 2015 season as one of the top squads in the 72-team league, with a 10-4 record and tied for second place in the Beaker Division. The team's big wins came over league powers Catholic, Tufts, and Villanova. The Hoyas advanced through the first weekend of the league tournament before falling to Villanova in the Round of 32. As of this writing, the Club is off to another good start in 2016, winning six of its first eight games and leading the Haboob Division. Our distribution list includes nearly 100 local Hoyas, approximately 30 of whom are regular contributors to the team in one way or another, plus a strong core that has played together for nearly ten years. The group includes alumni from the Class of 1994 all the way up to this year's Class of 2016, and covers all skill levels. The Hoya softball team is led by Coach Steve Wanczyk (MA '04), Assistant Coach Mark Murphy (SFS ’06), and Assistant Coach John Crisafulli (SFS '04).
The Club’s CAN flag football team finished the 2015 season 5-5, good for fourth place in the Hawkeye Division. In the tournament, the team fell to perennial power Maryland. Each team is responsible for providing referees for other teams’ games. The flag football team includes players from multiple schools and class years and is led by Coach Wynne Kelly (COL '00) and Co-Coach Thomas Quinn (SFS ‘07).
The basketball team, led by Coach Nick Hart (MSB '10) and Coach John Crisafulli (SFS '04), finished the season in third place in the Jordan Division with a record of 4-4. This included a thrilling overtime win over two-time champion and rival Syracuse. The team played an extremely difficult schedule this year, facing four of the top nine teams in the 32-team league. The Hoyas finished the season with a one-point loss to Yale in the league tournament.
